The leaves are falling, pumpkins are getting picked, and an air of spookiness is beginning to take effect. There are some who can’t wait for the chance to dress up and embrace the supernatural but there’s nothing stopping you from celebrating a bit early. Plenty of time to pick out the right costume and decide how you’re going to spend the haunted eve. However, if that’s not your cup of pumpkin spice latte, there are also new game releases to look forward to and make time to play. With that said, here are our picks for the best indie games in October 2021, both spooky and non-spooky.
Upcoming Indie Games in October 2021
The Last Campfire
Camping is something that doesn’t appeal to everybody but it’s something that can definitely evoke a feeling of adventure. The visual of a fire burning alone in the wilderness creates a distinct feeling of mystery that piques curiosity. This comes to light in the upcoming title by Hello Games called The Last Campfire, the first entry to our list of the best indie games in October 2021. Despite the title, this game is not as grim as it would have you believe and puts you in the role of a creature known as an Ember. It’s up to you to guide him on a journey through a wild and magical world in hopes of finding a way home. It combines puzzles with exploration and colorful visuals.
The Last Campfire will release on PC, Switch, PlayStation, iOS, and Xbox on October 7, 2021.
Peace, Death! 2
Death is one of the core forces that make up the very fabric of the universe, but it makes you wonder exactly how it might operate behind the scenes. It may just be one omnipresent entity or a whole system in a place full of bureaucracy and overwhelmed workers. The devs at AZAMATIKA have returned to further explore the system with Peace Death! 2. You are once again playing an employed reaper whose duty is to correctly judge the souls of your clients for either praise or punishment. Things are much more hectic this time around with more space to work with and more elements to manage.
Peace Death! 2 will release on PC on October 11, 2021.
The Alien Cube
While the prospect of encountering technology or beings from another world may be exciting, it’s also very terrifying. We have no idea what lurks out there and how it would respond if it ever saw us. This is tested by Alessandro Guzzo with his upcoming game The Alien Cube, which has landed on our list of the best indie games in October 2021. It puts you in the role of the unlucky recipient of a strange inheritance left behind by your missing uncle. It takes you out into the middle of nowhere full of caves and facilities that are made worse by your recurring nightmares. Try and discover the truth as you struggle to stay alive amidst incomprehensible horror.
The Alien Cube game will release on PC on October 14, 2021.
The Crow King
To be the king of anything would be an awesome responsibility. Most of us picture such a figure sitting on a throne in a palace filled with treasures and located at the head or in the center of a kingdom. But how different would it be if you were the king of something less regal, like crows? Ducktail Games is going to weigh in on this with the soon-to-be-released The Crow King. In this game, you play as a newly chosen king who is driven to take back lands conquered by evil. While you don’t control crows directly, you’ll need to take advantage of any opportunity you can to build up your army and gather resources for the coming conflict.
The Crow King will release on PC on October 15, 2021.
Sometimes the names that stick most easily in your head are those that are most unusual or hard to pronounce. The folks at Dusk Wave Arts LLC may have achieved both by naming their game Delphyq. A title like this can only be connected to a story that takes place in another world or in the future. It seems to be the latter as you are put into the role of an unseen mastermind with various forces and units to command at will. The organization you’re running is rebellious in nature with the goal of taking down a corporate tyrant called The Balance. Your job is to upset The Balance with strategy and tactics in a universe devoid of random chance. Prepare yourself for complex battles and stories ahead.
Delphyq will release on PC on October 19, 2021.
Into The Pit
When thinking about a pit, not a lot of positive things come to mind. They frequently serve as places to get rid of things or trap living beings. This also makes them an ideal area to host battles and other brutal competitions for people who have nothing to lose. While this is partly what Nullpointer Games has gone for, there’s more depth to Into The Pit, which is why it’s found its way to our list of the best indie games in October 2021. You’re playing as a mystic with a penchant for seeking out knowledge and magic which leads you to a strange village where a demonic portal is said to be. You’ll be faced with monstrous creatures and dark powers as you descend further into the pit where you may get far more than you bargained for.
Into the Pit will release on PC and Xbox on October 19, 2021.
Forgive Me Father
It’s hard to live a life that’s completely free of regret, but regret is something that helps define a person’s life. One of the most common regrets that people have is the relationship they have with other people and the desire to leave nothing unsaid. Byte Barrel will have you asking for forgiveness in their title Forgive Me Father. You’ll need to ask for it as you risk your life hunting down creatures born from insanity and Lovecraft’s diary. It’s a gritty, brutal FPS with comic book flair that’s reminiscent of Sin City. Mind your mental health and take down any monster that would threaten it.
Forgive Me Father will release on PC on October 26, 2021.
If there’s a type of building where bad stuff is likely to go down, it’d be a mansion with manors being a close second. Fossil Games has gone for the latter with the upcoming release Sunshine Manor, the final entry to our list of the best indie games in October 2021. This pixel horror game puts you into the shoes of Ada, a psychic visitor to the accursed manor. You’ll have to master psychic powers as you face numerous monsters and other supernatural threats in this old-school-style RPG. Follow along with an interesting story filled with scares and spookiness that’ll test your brain and keep you from lingering in the dark for too long.
Sunshine Manor will release on PC, Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox on October 31, 2021.
